When my first three babies hatched I was sure they weren’t really ornates because all of the ones I had seen had black shells with yellow centers on the scutes. My babies were all light gray on their shells. I didn’t know that the light gray I was seeing would later turn into the yellow scute centers and the new growth would be black. Vickie
