Africans generally don’t get as large as an Oscar. I’ve kept Africans for years, and they only get to about 4 inches or so.(Some do get a litle larger if kept in a very large tank) If you’re going to go the cichlid route, stick with Africans. I believe Oscars are a South American Cichlid. And the North American cichlids are very large and aggressive as well (i.e. Large Mouth Bass) Check them out at a pet store. Auratus, zebras, and Johonnis (sorry if I mispelled any of those) are some of the more common ones. Johonnis are cool, because the males are black with blue and the females are an orange color! If kept in ideal conditions they breed pretty easily as well. They’re mouth brooders so it’s a really neat process!
