I keep mine in brackish. But, I feed them in a separate fresh water tank daily. I figure that this gives them a chance to drink fresh water daily. I visit the Florida Aquarium frequently – their dbt tank is not brackish, but flat out Gulf of Mexico salinity. They bring in their salt water in tankers from out in the Gulf of Mexico. In the dbt tank they have a dish of fresh water on the basking rock and I have seen the Florida dbt’s stick their head in this dish all the time and drink the fresh water. The biologist told me that the fresh water drinking makes the dbt’s less sluggish. Hope this helps, Bob
