From what I’ve read, a mix of 25% marine water is best. So instead of 1/2 for every gallon, maybe use 1/2 for every four gallons. Also, for the shell rot, it sounds like you are doing good with changing the water daily. One thing to try is salting the water and dry tanking at night.
