Todd, I believe the “farming” then was based upon harvesting wild specimens. That’s why dbt populations were so depleted at the turn of the century. However, I’m sure there were probably some efforts at captive breeding programs. This much I know, there was a lot of research done on the species at the time – especially in the Carolinas.
