Hi.
I was a member of the yahoo group for a long while. I don’t have DBTs anymore but I am looking for turtle advice and I always felt like the people in the Yahoo DBT group were more knowledgeable and experienced than the other internet clubs I belonged to.I’m a lot older than I was when I bought my first turtle in 1998. I now have significant progressive health issues that are making it harder to properly care for the turtles that I have. Not complaining, just facing reality.
I have been de-turtling for several years. I have been networking in turtle clubs and keeping my eyes and ears open for situations and people who can adopt some of my crew and I probably have 1/3 as many turtles as I had 10 years ago. I now have 5 aquatic turtles in 3 outdoor ponds and several box turtles free ranging in my backyard.
My biggest challenge is finding a permanent home for my 22-year-old (22 pound) common snapping turtle that I bought as a baby in 1998. Not many people have the inclination, resources, or experience to take on this animal. I can’t release her into the wild for many good reasons. I need to find someone who will be able to make the commitment to care for this turtle for the foreseeable future and then can re-home the turtle successfully when they have become too old. She could live another 50 years and outlast a bunch of keepers.
I used Facebook a few years ago and found a good fit for some box turtles but it wasn’t an easy process. Lots of people were sketchy and most people who contacted me flaked out after I asked questions about their ability and experience in caring for box turtles. I guess I am not looking forward to that process again.
I have two questions for this group:
1) Where else besides Facebook would you look or post an ad for re-homing? [For Facebook I plan to go to @turtleandtortoiserehomingpage If you think that there are better places to post I’m listening.]
2) Are there any individuals that you know that would be a good resource for me to speak with?Any advice, recommendations, referrals you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Thanks for posting and asking for help. Besides Facebook you might want to try rehoming through Fauna Classified and just be very careful to verify that they can actually care for a large snapping turtle. Also I would image that Facebook must have a group for snapping turtle fans just like they have a group for DBTs. It might be best to work with people that know the species well. I did a quick FB search and came up with the results shown in the attached picture.
As far as individuals, I used to be involved with turtle rescue years ago but I really don’t know who is doing it now, although I know they are out there.
Good luck!
