My housemate has fallen in love with an ornate diamondback terrapin that she saw at a local pet shop. It is the owners personal pet and he doesnt stock them or know of any breeders. What would it take for us to have just one ornate? What size tank? I know the bigger the better but I am wondering (since my boyfriend and his friends have been aching to try building a tank for a red eared slider) if we could build something that was not as tall as a typical aquarium with more width and length. Also, how would we go about aquiring a baby? They are adorable, I think I could fall in love too! Thanks for any info anyone can offer. Olivia

Personally, I think a tank with about 40 gallons of swimming capacity would probably suffice. Depending on the true identification of which subspecies you saw, diamondbacks can grow up to 9″. Firstly, if you haven’t already, you may want to check out Terrapin Genus to find out whether it was actually an ornate that you saw. Many in the pet industry erroneously label several different subspecies as ornate.
