Thanks again to everyone who responded to my questions regarding shipping live turtles. I picked up some good tips and a lot of new insight. We have determined that my problems with Airborne Express are due to being in a rural area serviced by a “private contractor” (even though the vehicle says “Airborne” and the guy wears an Airborne uniform shirt, he’s not an Airborne employee!). We think we have solved that problem by having the packages held for pick up to avoid them being hauled around in the back of the private contractor’s truck. Now, WHERE the package gets held can be confusing (but that’s another very long story for another night), but the “hold” areas of both the airport terminal and the local private contractor are air-conditioned offices in our case. On a related note, anyone else have time to read the latest issue of REPTILES magazine with the feature article on shipping live reptiles? They conclude that UPS and the USPS are the two current favorites, but acknowledge that many shippers use FEDEX and Delta Dash (especially for larger shipments). The author mentions that some shippers told him turtles and snakes are prohibited from the mail, but he says he and his postmaster couldn’t find those regs in print (I’ve seen them regarding aquatic turtles at my local post office!). Finally, the author mentions in the middle of the text that Airborne Express has been favored by many shippers, but that Airborne “recently” (two to six months ago to get into this issue???) announced that it no longer handles live shipments of any kind! I know that turtles are still going Airborne from personal experience, but has anyone heard this from an Airborne rep recently? Todd in Texas
cap@tupacmail.netJuly 18, 2001 at 3:00 am #15209Todd, I have shipped out five packages of turtles over the last two weeks with Airborne Express. I took the packages down to a local Airborne office. On the box I wrote in large letters LIVE, the desk clerk asked me what was in the box. Since I read all the posts earlier I told he is was a lizard. He wasn’t sure if they could accept the package so he got the manager. The manager looked through a book and found a rule forbidding the shipment of birds, snakes, frogs, and lizards unless they individually boxed inside the shipping box (weird that they did not mention turtles). I assured them that they were individually boxed and waved any responsible for damage or death to the turtles. After that they took them. I will say these people did not seem to real know what the rules were about shipping live am animal but I was able to convince them it was OK. Anyways I also know several large breeders that shipping with Airborne everyday amd they tell them that the packages have turtles inside them. On a side note I sent one turtle through USPS and they did not even ask me what was in the box that was living. Hope this help Jonathan — In diamondbackterrapins@y…, Todd Stockwell
