Hi everyone: I just wanted to let you all know that I finally heard back from the NY Dept of Conservation and NY residents are NOT required to have a license to buy or own a captive bred diamondback terrapin. The license is only required if you “fish” for them- in my opinion that should be outlawed all together. A question for all of you out there. Do the DB’s have to be kept in brackish water or can they live with other water turtles (like red-eared turtles) in fresh water? Thanks! Christine, I have two dbt hatchlings and I keep mine in fresh water however they are captive born and bred dbt’s and have been kept like this from the start. From what I understand dbt’s that have been kept in fresh switch easily to brackish but ones that have lived in brackish or have been kept in brackish do not seem to switch very well to the fresh. I know that to salt or not is a huge debate on here. I just do what the breeder I got em from does (his seem to thrive),even though he is bit fruity at times and has extremely long nose and ear hair, he seems to know his dbt’s LOL I think Chun will agree with me on this(I have yet to see Chun nose and ear hair as a comparison though) hehe. hope this helps even with the humor mixed in. -robin
