Bob’s post reminded me that I have been meaning to post about a product I have been using on sick turtles for three years now with great success. It is “Nitrofura-G” blended antibiotic capsules, formula A9-B, which is a furazolidone blend for fresh, cool water fish such as goldfish and koi made by Aquatronics of Oxnard, California. I buy the 100 capsule pack online from ThatPetPlace. The directions recommend using one capsule to each 10 NET gallons of water. I sometimes treat my smaller tanks, but I usually isolate the sick turtle in a small plastic tub or bucket and put a capsule in. These have a very strong blue dye, so they produce “temporary” bleu morphs from white skinned dbts (ha, ha, ha). I use betadine and other topicals on shells and skin and Baytril orally, but I use this Nitrofura antibiotic blend in the hospital tub water on all my turtles with any type of illness. It seems to really speed up skin healing. It has appeared to bring back some really sick turtles for me over the past three years, including both hatchlings and adults. I can think of several that were nearly lifeless that perked up within 30 minutes to an hour of being placed in it. Hate to say it’s a “miracle cure” and sound like a snake-oil salesman, but I have been amazed at what this has done for my turtles. I started using Acriflavin also after reading about it on this list, but I see still faster and stronger results from the Nitrofura-G. Todd
