I just got my copy of Turtles, Tortoises &Terrapins by Ronald Orenstein today. It is a really sharp, full-color book that touches on most everything. It’s not an encylopedia, but the text is a little different and fun to read. Lots of great pictures of turtles from all over the world. I especially was amazed by the section on ancient turtles and prehistoric ancestors – particularly the reconstrcutions of horned turtles! There are only two pics of diamondback terrapins in the book, and nothing above dbt basic info. in the text, but this is still a must-have turtle book. There’s really nothing quite like it in print. I hesitate to call it a “coffee table” book as it is a very serious treatment, but it would look great laying out where even non-turtle devotees might enjoy thumbing through it. The publisher, Firefly, also puts out a nice full-color turtle calendar. The calendar does have a month (November) with a large pic of a “silver” concentric adult female dbt that is really great. I can’t wait till November now! Brown Trout Publishers’ 2002 Turtle calendar is as nice as usual, but no dbts. Todd
