Hello all. I’ve read a bunch of the messages and viewed the albums. Some might have known me from Kingsnake, etc. I’ve been keeping turtles for 20 years now, and my wife has for about 5 or so. Soon we will be moving into a new house (shopping now!) and i’ll get to build my 5000 sq. foot outdoor enclosure for north american species. I live in central North Carolina and have a great climate for keeping turtles. In addition to the outdoor pen with an inground concrete pond, I plan on a small pen with a tub pond for some DBT’s that might not be able to handle the year round outdoors. I’m most interested in what I believe is the macrospilota’s, and haven’t had much luck finding out if anyone is attempting a hibernation with them. I’m planning on a 200 gallon aquarium indoors, with a built in divided section for land space, that would hopefully house them except through the summer, when they’d enjoy the outdoor enclosure/pond just for them. In any case, I’d prefer to keep them in the aquarium until I was no longer worried about bird predation, which from hatchlings would likely be 2-3 years. I think a 200gallon aquarium might be overkill for then, but I’d likely raise some of my other hatchlings at the same time. Beautiful pictures up, hope to learn plenty about one of the few species sets of N.A. chelonians I haven’t spent much time with.
