Going through my mental checklist of my new tank setup, I realized that I do not have an adequate basking area for the turtles when they arrive. I have washed river stone for the substrate, but I was wondering what people have had luck with, or what I could pile up over the substrate and out of the water. I have heard that piled rocks can cause a hazard for the turtles because they tend to shift, and can cause chips in the shell. If anyone has any suggestions as to what the best basking area would look like, that would be great!
Jonathan HelmsJune 10, 2002 at 4:16 pm #17200Rocks and cinder blocks do tend to chip their shells. I use natural cork, it does make the water look like tea. I have heard if you boil the cork that helps it not bleed in the water. After a couple months it stops turning the water tea colored. I use it in all my small tanks and they stay crystal clear now. Good Luck with the new arrivals. Glaeser Walt-P55431June 10, 2002 at 4:47 pm #17201I have a rectangular wire basket from Lowes with one long side cut out to form a cave, with flat stones and plants around it for a hiding place. On top, I have some river stones and flat rocks, but you can glue them together with silicone adhesive (not caulk), which comes in clear, black, or white I believe at Home Depot or Lowes. It’s very natural looking and holds the lamp heat better than wood or caulk… Walt G. —–Original Message—– From: bfd27 [mailto:bfd27@…] Sent: Monday, June 10, 2002 12:47 PM To: diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com Subject: [diamondbackterrapins] Just basking away…. diamondback_terrapinJune 10, 2002 at 9:28 pm #17204For hatchlings, I like to use premolded basking sites which attach to the sides of the tank via suction cups. They are terraced to allow turtles easy access to the top tier and look somewhat natural. Contact me if you’re interested and I’ll try to dig up the brand info, etc. Chun Tail Moderator
