Porcelain sockets can handle a tremendous amount of heat. If you are using mercury vapor or spotlight bulbs with any wattage higher than 60, I’d recommend investing in one. Standard utility clamp lights from hardware stores (some hardware stores will cell ceramic socketed ones also) can melt through the plastic and be a fire hazard.
