i was wondering what types of bacteria are beneficial to the tank. i have lately been seeing brown/green stuff growing and wondered if that was an indicator of anything harmful vs. a sign of beneficial growth. i have a fluval filter and the water seems clean. let me know! thanks–Lindsay
The brown/green stuff is simply algae that feeds on nitrates present in the water. Nitrifying bacteria such as nitrosomonas and nitrobacter are beneficial to the tank and help breakdown toxic ammonia and nitrites. However, the byproduct of their activity is nitrates, which is relatively harmless but can induce the growth of algae. Solution: partial water changes on a regular basis. The presence of algae is not necessarily harmful or beneficial – a better indicator maybe the presence of feeder fish and how well they do in their environment. -Chun — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, “nikkicoco11
