You are likely right Steven about breeding 2 phenotypically similar turtles. My main concern was what if I can’t find 2 different chesapeake lines here in canada… I may have to resort to breeding a carrier and a chesapeake… then the multiple gene thing plays more of a role. And yes, Julie is the source of the chesapeake’s here in Canada that I had mentioned. Drats eh? oh well… we’ll keep looking. Thanks though! The fellow from Texas, Richard Hollander… I haven’t yet responded to him… planning on it. Any ideas on whether or not he has export permits? Don’t worry about it though… I will be contacting him shortly. (if you’re watching Richard, perhaps you’ll beat me to it! hehehe) If he can export I may be able to contact our local CFIA regulation office and set up a meeting with the “stickler”. hehehe. If he realizes who and what I am he may feel differently? I dunno. worth a shot. Suppose we could label them as makeup compacts and ship em. But then they would likely not be shipped well and could be confiscated at the boarder alive or dead. Plus I don’t want to receive any fines etc. Its soooo frustrating. If I ever start feeling better healthwise on this end I’m thinking I may persue the CFIA and Heath Canada on changing their regs. Have some kind of special “turtles and salmonella” form that all importers have to fill out and sign or something. Just not a flat out no. There are lots of conscientious people out here that can take care of themselves and their pets well. Give us a chance to prove it. Enough of my ranting… thanks! Michelle PS oh yeah… I almost forgot. Sorry groupers, I seem to harass you guys an aweful lot! I’ve just got sooo many questions and I’m so happy to have found a place where I can fiinally ask them. (Thanks Julie for leading me here!) Tony Simmons suggested I ask the group… I realize that diamondbacks require more biologically pure water than most other turtles. My fish and slider tanks are tested routinely… what is the max level of nitrates that you groupers would recommend. My nitrites and ammonia are always practically zero due to the filters I employ but don’t know what kind of nitrate levels they can handle. My fish can usually handle up to 30ppm but I keep the levels below 15ppm always… any suggestions anyone? I plan on using freshwater rather than salt. I may make the water slightly brakish however. But wouldn’t proper husbandry; keeping the chemical levels in check by employing proper biological filtration etc, help control stress, and increase the animals resistance to the pathogens? Pathogens are only an issue if the animal is unable to fight them off. I have heard good things regarding the use of UV sterilizers in a I have heard of terrapin keepers using UV on the water after it leaves the filter media… Thus killing ~99% of the pathogens etc. I have a concern there too however. If we kill off the pathogens by UV, we are also killing all the beneficial bacteria that turtles need in order to stimulate and maintain their immune systems. We as people have increased our immune related problems by killing our natural flora. I don’t know if general area UV sterilization of the water (rather than high local sterilization) would be enough to kill off the the good bugs… Turtles come from an environment flooded with UV for 12 hours or so everyday when the sun rises. It may definately help keep things in check. I see I’ve got more research to do here. Everything in moderation I guess… Maybe always have a UV light over the water areas too… not just over the basking areas? However, I You’ve been able to keep fish with your terrapins?! Awesome! A friend of mine here in town has feeder guppies living in with his Malayan Box Turtle. They seem to breed enough to keep themselves available for the occasional turtle snack. Plus they really add to the appearance of the tank. What species of fish do you keep with your turts? I’ve been really wanting to do this but I’ve been too afraid of murdering my fish. I did have a few cichlids that I was considering donating to the cause… nasty buggers. hehehe. I really do appreciate your input Chun… Steven… which do you prefer? Chun it is… It has been anyways, kinda hard to change. I have used fish as biological quality indicators and as another level of balance in the tanks. UV sterilizers are always a plus in my book based on experience. And another note as I was skimming over some posts, I believe the pattern of parents can easily skip a generation in an average of 25% of offspring if it is the dominant trait and both parents express the trait.
