The fish should have added only a minimal load to your tank. You might be feeding them too much. I had a 75 gallon tank with two aquaclear 300 and a powerhead with a prefilter for years with about 15 fish and 6 or 8 turtles and did not have to clean anymore than once a week for the filters and once every three weeks on the gravel. The UG is a waste of time if you have many turtles. UG filters might be ok for a tetra tank or other very low particle load setups. They seem to get a long just fine with the terrapins. I got a few feeder fish as well, and the cichlids seem to love them as snacks. The terrapins played with the feeders at first, but then kind of gave up. They pretty much only play with them now for sport rather than food. I heard mixed statements regarding UG filters, and I’m hesitant to get one unless I absolutely need it. Is there some other way to solve this setup, or am I just going to have to shell out for a UG filter and a Power Head?
