Volunteer & Field Internship Positions

Thought I’d pass on some interesting terrapin opportunities that Allen Salzberg published in his special newsletter (thanks Allen!). The latter positions involves working with terrapin researcher Dr. Roosenburg: 2) Summer-Time Diamondback Terrapin Conservation Project At Jamaica Bay. Live in the New York City area? 2. Have an interest in Wildlife and Conservation? 3. Like working on the beach? 4. Like TURTLES? We need volunteers to help with our summer-time diamondback terrapin conservation project at Jamaica Bay. Again this year we need volunteers to help from the end of May until the beginning of August. Some volunteers help one afternoon or one morning each week, some come for a whole day each week, some even more. In many cases college students can get credit for their assistance. Volunteers must have their own transportation to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (on Cross Bay Blvd, south of Howard Beach and north of Rockaways) or use public transportation (both subway and bus can work). Volunteers must be reliable, old enough to sit still quietly while watching nesting, have reasonably good vision and hearing, and be able to walk on sand. Volunteers will be exposed to lots of sun and warm temperatures but biting insects are not too common. What you’ll be doing is a fair bit of walking, standing, and sitting, while watching for terrapins to come on shore and then nest. You’ll need to be able to take detailed notes, and the ability to work independently once you’re trained is essential. We are never far from water, telephones, and restrooms, but it can get hot! We’re holding orientation meetings for both new and returning volunteers at the Visitor Center at JBWR on Saturday, 22 May at 1:00 and again Sunday, 23 May at 1:00. Please try to come to one of these meetings. We will discuss the entire project, the ways volunteers can help, and volunteer scheduling. At that time I’ll ask you to commit to some sort of volunteer schedule, so think about your availability beforehand. Two positions are available for terrapins field research internships in Chesapeake Bay. Both positions require a Coast Guard approved small boating certificate and experience handling small boats. Work will occur at two study sites, one in the Patuxent River in St. Mary’s County Maryland and the other on Poplar Island, in Talbot County Maryland. Interns will be responsible for conducting mark- recapture studies and locating terrapins nests. The job requires occasional heavily lifting, and maintaining a positive can do attitude during sometimes taxing working conditions. Positions pay $8/hr for a 40 hour work week with additional funds available for lodging at the field sites. Interested individual also should have their own car. Work begins mid May and continues through mid July with the possibility of continuation until mid August.
