If you use antibiotics in their water (which they will ingest), you may want to give them some probiotics (beneficial bacterial cultures) orally during and for a while afterwards since the antibiotics will kill off the good bugs in their intestinal tracts as well as whatever nasty bacteria you are trying to eliminate. Probiotics help strengthen and modulate the immune system. Best brand I___ve found for myself and all my critters is Primal Defense___ comes in powder or caplets available most reputable health food stores___ my RES greedily gobble up the __ caplets I give to each of them___ they have other vitamins/nutrients etc mixed in as a culture media for the bacteria in the culture___ helps the heat and acid resistant bacteria survive the stomach acids etc and feed them so they can do their job well when they reach the intestine. You cannot overdose on probiotics. And the bacteria in the cultures should not cause further harm to the shell rot. The increased nutrient uptake by better digestion of foods and stimulation to the immune system should help increase the rate of healing. Best of luck! Bad is when it covers an entire area not just spotty, also, when rubbing it off bleeding occurs. Medical treatment is necessary.
