Hi everyone, I have a question about temperature sexing. I know what temperature ranges produce male and female hatchlings (75F to 79F mainly males and 82F to 86F mainly females.) My question is, does any one know what week the temperature is decided? Chun this could be a question you could at to your list for Marguerite Whilden. Thanks Jonathan Scute Mod http://www.diamondbackterrapin.com
Marguerite WhildenMay 28, 2004 at 9:37 pm #19667Jonathan Interesting question. I met a researcher from the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute – Al Place. He has been investigating the point at which the sex is determined by analyzing changes in specific hormones. Eggs from terrapins and snapping turtles are incubated at specific temps and dissected at various frequencies. Al might know the point at which the sex is determined. He had a snapping turtle which apparently switched genders midway during incubation. I cannot remember how this happened. Check with Al at UMBI. Thanks for all your good work mw Marguerite WhildenTerrapin Institute http://www.terrapininstitute.orgP. O.
