Attachments : Hello everyone : I bought the young terrapin as the attachment last week. The seller told me that it is a kind of ornate. But when i review some information on the web-site, i prefer to identify it as Texas terrapin. Because i have less experience about terrapins, i hope someone can tell me that which subspecies of terrapins it is. If you identify it as Texas, would you guess which kind (Brain, Blonde, Lava Little, Pinky, Flame) of subspecies it is. Hi Benson, Yes, he sure looks like a Texan to me. I looked at the picture before I read you post and thought nice looking Texan. His subspecies is Litoralis or common name Texas. You asked “which kind (Brain, Blonde, Lava Little, Pinky, Flame)” All of the names you listed are just names of my Texas terrapins they are all the same subspecies (Texas diamondback terrapins). Hi, Benson; Your juvenile does appear to be a Texas dbt (M. t. littoralis). The colors and the vertebral knobs appear to be right on for a specimen of the Texas sub-species. We have seen an increase in seller’s using “ornate” to describe the Texas subspecies. Sellers have more often called nicer, lighter-phase northerns and carolinas “ornates.” On this list, we have tried to reserve “ornate” for the Florida subspecies M. t. macrospilota. As far as which of Jonathan’s adults your juvenile will most resemble, the basic colors and pattern will remain through adulthood, although there may be some subtle changes to its overall color phase over the years.
