hello, i was very excited to find so many good resources on these turtles already online, but i just wanted to be 100% sure i’m doing everything right for this turtle… how i got him: i found the turtle in Long Beach, NY yesterday walking along the sidewalk heading straight for the road. because i was afraid of either a car running him over, or a seagul picking him off, i took the turtle in for safety and did a little research what i know: this turtle is a hatchling, almost identically matching the same turtle in this photo – http://www.neoterrapin.com/keeper/caroleh2.jpg – since i’v been a tropical fish hobbyist for a while, i had spare tanks lying around and back up filters if i ever needed them. basically everything i needed if i ever wanted to set up another tank. i also have a box turtle thats been a close pet of mine since i was 5 years old, so basically you could understand my reason for taking the little diamondback home with me. where he is now: i filled a 20 gallon (long) half way, gravel on bottom, floating dock with a ramp, and running an aquaclear filter. i added about a spoonfull of aquarium salt to the water. for now the only lighting i have is just a desk lamp placed next to the tank. why i’m posting here: i am looking for tips and pointers on raising this turtle as healthy as possible. i know i’ll need to get a better light source, with a bulb providing UVA and UVB. please let me know if im doing anything wrong and if im missing anything. and also tips on food for the guy, right now what i got is a small thing of floating pellets for water turtles. any feedback will be much appreciated, thanks a bunch -brendan

Hello Brendan, Congrats on your new “treasure”. 🙂 I recommend a thermometer for the tank (if you don’t already have one), so that you can monitor the tank temp. I fed my hatchling: meal worms which I purchased at a local fish/reptile store and reptile sticks/pellets. Good luck! Renee’ Brendan

I can vouch for this advice. I found a little Painted Turtle not too long ago, and couldn’t get it to eat pellets. But once I gave the little guy mealworms, they were gone in no time. I do however, cut their heads off prior to giving them to the turtle just to be on the safe side. For everyone wrote back reccomending mealworms, and other worms, thanks a lot. It worked like a charm for me.
