Care for young DBT while on vacation

Hello All, My husband and I will be on vacation next week and need advice regarding care for our young DBT while away. So far, we’ve left Flipper for a weekend and all was well. However, we will be gone an entire week and I wanted to know what kind of arrangements others make for their DBT while on vacation. Are there automatic feeders for pellets? If so, I think Flipper would be OK with that for a few days. My vet only boards dogs & cats, so boarding him isn’t an option. And, my friends and family have either young kids or cats, so I don’t think Flipper would be in a safe environment with them. I found Flipper in Feb ’05, he measured a mere 1″ x 1.5″. Now, 6 months later, he measures 2.75″ x 3.5″. Any ideas and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks! Renee’
Hi there, I also have trouble finding turtle-sitters. If I am leaving for more than a couple of days, I try to have a friend or neighbor drop in and give the guys some pellets or frozen brine shrimp. For a week I would think they would only need to come by maybe twice. Although I usually feed outside the tank, when I’m gone I just tell whoever it is to go ahead and drop food in the tank. Then we do a filter cleaning when we get home. Be sure there is plenty of water in there before you leave! Ours evaporates fast and then the little guys have trouble getting up onto the rocks to bask. Good luck! NicoleVal and Renee Morel
Our wedding is coming up and we plan on being gone for at least 7 days for the honeymoon. We’ve made arrangements for a family member to come stay at the house for the week. We are boarding our dogs and did offer to compensate the family member for the trouble. In times when we are going to be gone for 4 days or less, we just have a fellow turtle keeper watch after our turtles and tortoises. We are lucky enough to have two different people nearby. One of them, Jim, is on this list. He’s actually the person we got our terrapins from. BonitaVal and Renee Morel
