My 7 year old female DB seems to be getting the broader looking head that females get. I have seen pix of females with really large “Brain” kind of heads. I’m wondering if these larger heads start getting larger and then keep getting larger to a point and then stop or what is the usual pattern of development.
John, head size is subspecies and diet dependent. Most terrapins raised in captivity will not develop heads as large as their wild counterparts. Northerns have typically smaller heads compared to other subspecies while the Gulf Coast subspecies have the biggest heads. The hard-shelled diet consumed by Gulf Coast subspecies strengthen and enlarge the jaws but you will not see this much in captive specimens fed a soft diet of pellets, fish, etc. -Stephen C — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, “joch230”
