Hi all! This is kind of a silly question but still I gotta ask!- I have noticed that 1 of my 4 turts has over the past month or, gotton much less active and eats less then normal……. my other 3 have been eating a little less, and are a tad less active– All look and other wise act healthy, and still bask.- Is this normal for the change of seasons…???? My 2nd ? is…… My turtles tank is in the living room where there is always a lot of activity. They will not bask during the day due to this- so I have to turn on the basking light during the middle of the night – and then they bask all night usually ( I have sneaked and checked ) Is this practice bad to do?? does this mess up the turtles natural clock??- I know that this is not normal or natural but it is the only way to get them to bask for a healthy amnt of time which is important I know. — Thanks, — Heather

If activity in the room is keeping them from basking, try covering half or all of the front of the tank with some sort of paper so they can’t see through it. Then keep the lights on for 14 hours during the day and leave the lights off at night. Stress alone can lead to a depressed immune system, and it sounds like they are stressed during the day, plus the use of basking lights at night might be confusing their internal clock. okay- I will try that- I didnt think it was a good idea to leave the light on at night but I recently got a 120G tank and had to put it in the liv room because of space reasons- So do you meant to cover the whole tank up? or just the area where they bask? –…. During the day is kind of when you want to watch and enjoy your nice 120G tank! Let’s think James Bond kind of stuff and install one of those mirrors in front of the tank where you can see in but they can’t see you! Anyhow, covering the whole tank would be pretty ugly…I guess I would see if you could just screen the basking area….but I wonder if they won’t feel safe going up to bask if they can’t see around them. I guess you just have to experiment. John — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, heather polechio http://tools.search.yahoo.com/newsearch/category.php?category=shopping
