Hi Everyone, Does anyone have any recommendations on what kind of heater to use? A ‘submersible’ heater was recommended but I was told to ‘put a cage around it’ so the turtle doesn’t burn himself. I’m not really handy so, What kind of heaters do you use? Is there a rule for how much wattage is needed to make sure the water is kept at the proper temperature. Is there a type of heater that works well that does not require a ‘cage’? As an alternative a ceramic heat bulb was also recommended. Does anyone use these in lieu of a heater and can you tell me which is better? Also, does anyone use a ‘plastic separator’ in their tank? I was told I could buy one but I’m not sure if that is the proper name. Something that I could insert that he could climb on to give him a dry area. Do these work? I saw something in a store, one side was bent and the other was straight-ish. It had what looked like green velco(?) on the bottom and two suction cups on the side. I have had trouble with suction cups for mostly everything I use; they don’t seem to work too long. I considered using a piece of cork board that I rinsed until the water became clear but I don’t know how to affix it so it doesn’t move. Can anyone help me? If there is anything better that you can recommend, please, I appreciate it very much. Thank you! Carmen xo Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.
Stephen ChewMarch 28, 2008 at 12:45 pm #21747Hi Carmen, Here’s a good link on some of the different heaters on the market today: http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/toppicks/tp/TPheaters.htm Your local Petsmart probably stocks several of the brands listed, as well as the heat guards that you can buy to protect your turtles from the heat. A plastic separator is something that divides a tank into 2 so you that you have essentially 2 tanks in 1. What you appear to be seeking is some sort of basking platform. Once again, pet stores usually carry at least one or two different basking platforms that you can choose from. Your best bet is probably to purchase the Zoo Med Turtle Dock which has a non-corrosive bracket to help keep it in place. -Stephen C — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, Carmen
CarmenMarch 28, 2008 at 4:19 pm #21750Hi Stephen, Thank you for your response and link. I looked through it and decided upon the Marineland Visi-Therm Deluxe. I went on Petsmart and saw it there only could not find a ‘heat guard’. Is there another name I should search for? I was thinking about ordering these online but if I can’t find the guard maybe it might be best to get them both together. I just want to know what I’m talking about when I ask for it. Thanks! for all your help. As always. -cStephen Chew

Jimbo CraigMarch 28, 2008 at 8:47 pm #21753Hey Carmen, A lot of folks with Turtle Tanks go with the other Marineland Heater…………….the “Stealth” model. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=12060 It’s just as accurate as the one you were thinking of getting (within 1 degree), plus it is basicly “turtle proof”. Because it already has a hard outer case (and not glass like the one you are thinking of getting), you don’t have to worry about your turtles ever breaking it or getting burned, so you don’t have to use a “heat guard” with this model. It has a great reputation and is considered to be one of the better heaters on the market. Also, as long as you have a smaller turtle, the Zoo Med docks work rather well until they get larger. The suction cups on mine never seem to fail. You probably want to get the largest one since these turtles seem to grow pretty fast: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=11289 Once they get older/larger, you may want to consider the floating cork: http://www.blackjungle.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=BJTS&Product_Code=CC-L&Category_Code=C3 You can screw an aluminum or galvanized “eye” screw into the cork and attach it to one end of the tank (under your basking station).
