Hello everyone, I have been reading and searching the messages and files here for all kinds of information and I am so grateful to all you who are willing to answer questions and mentor new terrapin enthusiasts. My first personal encounter with diamondbacks was in ’05. A terrapin laid her eggs in the middle of our gravel driveway. At the time I was aware of the plight of the diamondbacks in the Chesapeake but did not know what to do or who to call, or even if there was someone to call. A search of the internet got me to the terrapin institute. Marguerite was not only grateful but came all the way across the bay the very next day to retrieve the eggs. I was totally impressed with her dedication. Since that little adventure I set about learning all I could about terrapins and salt water marshes in general. We have a salt marsh in our side yard and the bay in our front yard. This May a hatchling showed up in the garage. I knew that if I put it in the marsh it would become a snack for any number of blue herons, white herons, etc. Soooo, you can all probably guess the rest of that story. In mid June the same female who laid the eggs in 2005 was seen trying to nest in our driveway again. I have not been able to find her nest this time but am checking the driveway religiously. Thanks in advance to all of you experts here who now will have to deal with all my questions. Marti

Hi Marti, You won’t find anyone more dedicated than Marguerite… Now this female terrapin you speak about – was she able to dig a nest in your gravel driveway?! Our group consist of members from all over the U.S. and the entire globe for that matter. Many have probably never encountered a terrapin in the wild. We would love to see pictures of the salt marsh and bay around your house, not to mention your gravel driveway if you get a chance. -Stephen C — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, “Marti Moses”
