I have blackdiamond terrapin which is about 2.5 inches in size and weights few oz. (I don’t have the exact figures with me but I would think they are still a hatchling.) I’ve read not to overfeed turtles but I’m worried that I’m not feeding the turtle enough. How many pellets (reptomin) of turtle food should I give to my turtle? On diamonbackterrapin website I read, “I feed them twice a day. Only feed them as much as they can eat in fifteen minutes. Once they read 3 inches I suggest feeding them only once a day or every other day.” Is there turtle weight/food/age ratio? Rule of thumb? There seems to be very little hard data on feeding terrapins! Hungry in Georgia, Phillip

I guess I never really measure but I have read that there is an old rule of thumb that the turtles head is about the size of it’s stomach and to feed that much. I’d swear they can eat more than that though!-John

in size and feeding should I read 3 to You do not have to feed him twice a day that is too much and he will get obese. I would not feed him reptomin exclusively. If you do you are likely to end up with a lumpy shelled obese turtle. Feed him a variety of foods. Live insects (like crickets and superworms) bits of shrimp, smelt, freeze dried krill and even try some leafy greens like chicory. Not likely to eat it but hey I have one that prefers greens over meat. You could feed him once a day as much as he will eat in about a 5 to 10 minute period or even scale that back to every other day. As long as you are feeding a variety of foods the turtle will do well on this sort of feeding plan. Twice a day is too much though. Steve
