The state of Maryland is offering a tax credit up to $500 for anyone who sets up one of these baby oyster floats in the water off their property. If this catches on, the increased health of the bay will no doubt aid to the survival of terrapins in itself. In our future regulatory meetings I would like to toss around possibilities of getting the state involved with a tax credit for those spending money to preserve, re-create, increase terrapin nesting habitat on their properties. If someone has terrapins nesting on their property it could even go as far as nest cages like those they use mostly for sea turtles to protect the vulnerable eggs from predators. I know that a new privatized headstarting program isn’t likely due to the increased regulations, but even that, if monitored, could get the public involved to do the work that the DNR and professionals cannot take on due to a lack of money and manpower. As we all know, there are many people out there that would love to help out a depleted and struggling species like the diamondback but don’t have the means, money, or permission. Maybe we could change that. Just a thought. Here is the oyster article: http://wjz.com/local/oysters.2.854112.html – Scott
Hi Scott – I live on the eastern shore of Maryland and I believe alot of people I know would participate if physically getting the cage wasn’t a big deal for them. Please let me know if I can help you with this effort. My skills are first, as a professional artist and second, as an executive secretary. Opposites I know but the bills must be paid! Perhaps getting some promotional material together…sincerely, Kathleen — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, Scott McDaniel
