Attachments :#ygrps-yiv-880812570 p {margin:0;}Help! My baby has this soft patch, seemingly coming out from between the middle sections on his plastron. Can I treat it myself, or should I call the vet. The patch is soft enough to scrape with my fingernail, and orangish. I’m including a picture. Thanks for any suggestions!Kate

Kate, your hatchling has shell rot. You will want to remove the soft cottage cheese-like material and clean the area out with either Betadine or Nolvasan. If it doesn’t start to heal up, you might consider dry docking for a few days. All the best. -Stephen C

Thanks! That’s what I thought! I’ve already treated it today, and will see how it goes. (I had a slight crash in the tank, but it is back on track now, so hopefully that will be it.) Luckily, I had begun feeding in a separate tub to help with the tank rebalancing, because otherwise I wouldn’t have noticed the spot beginning.Kate

At first I thought it looked like the spot where the egg sac would have been…but Stephen would know if it’s not that and it’s shell rot. I’ve never had one that young.-John
