My diamondback terrapin recently started to get swollen eyelids. The swollen area affects the bottom eyelid. Does anyone know what could be causing this and how I can fix it? I feel so bad seeing the turtle this way. I know that she can still see because she comes towards me when she sees me. Please advise….

Hi, sorry to hear of your friend. Is there any other signs of illness? eatting well? swimming lopsided or any discharge or sounds coming from the nose or mouth? what brand of uvb are you using? some have had issues.

A turtle in my care has had some shell issues in the past and after recommendations to raise the salinity has turned around in that regard. About a month ago she started basking more frequently then before but I figured it was just because the male housed with her tries to mate with her all the time. Soon after she stopped chewing on the crushed coral substrate and her beak started growing bigger. She still had tons of energy and was eating well. The past few days she has become lethargic and will not leave her basking area. If I put her back into the water she will immediately crawl back onto the basking platform. She does not seem to have any discharge from her eyes, mouth, or nostrils. The male is as healthy and active as ever, the water is clean, and I feed them a varied diet of live and pellet foods. Does anyone have any advise? I believe she is taking a quick turn for the worse and I cannot figure out why. Thank you in advance. Scott

Hi Scott, I would take your terrapin to the vet asap. Do you think she injested something? is she still eatting and pooping? how are her eyes? do you soak in fresh water at least once or twice a week to hydrate?

She is still eating and pooping. Her eyes look normal other then being a bit dry from basking for extended periods of time. No discoloration. I feed her in fresh water several times a week at which time she drinks plenty of fresh water.
