HI ALL… I have a 2 year old female that is very listless..Her eyes are swollen – not shut but close to it. She also have a film around the neck skin..and her shell has a “sticky” feel. From everything I have read here, I believe skin infection. I cannot hear breathing problems but not possitive of no respiritory infection. The eye problem showed up 2-3 weeks ago – I have used turtle eye drops daily. The skin problem, maybe about 2 weeks.. I do keep her in brackish water but the salt levels do not register on the hydrometer thing..so may not be high enough. She needs a vet, but I am seriuosly tapped out of funds..My emergency vet fund went to another pet.. This is my fault, I have been dealing with another pet that was seriously ill and that has taken up most of my time (and money). So the water is not as clean as it has been. What can I do to help this terrapin until I can get her to vet? Would something like a Sulfa block work?? Should I keep her in water or heated – dry enclosure?? ANY Advice would be welcomed – I would even consider finder her a better home if needed.. B
karen testaSeptember 20, 2010 at 10:46 pm #22878Hi, and thank you for reaching out for help for your friend, im sure you know she is in desperate need of a vet visit. i am sorry to say if you should not have an animal if you cant care for it properly but, i know, you know that. with that being said, here is a link that may help with a rescue for herhttp://www.anapsid.org/societies/index.htmlthe only thing i can tell you is she has to come out of that water she is in because her tank is harboring the bacteria or parasites that is making her ill.if it was my turtle, i would put her in a dry warm(always test after heat is on for one hour and keep it warm with a heating pad under tub, with a towel to bury under, and in a quite and dark place as stress is going to tax the immune system more) after a salt bath soak of two teaspoons of salt(not table salt, but aquairum salt only) to five gals of spring water (warmed to 80F)(not deep, so she can stand and breath but covering shell) change diet to include no freeze dried foods but raw natural fish(no thiaminase)like silversides and vitamin supplements like vit Cthen dry dock not more than 4 hrs a day.(this is questionable, as a vet hasnt examined or can i see your turt) scrub/disinfect (with a strong white vinegar and water mix as bleach never totally rinses out) everything down in her tank(have her alone, not with any other animal) prepare a good dry basking site with a high quality basking bulb(not flouresant but a mercury vapor bulb, but be careful as they are extra strong, and not to be used in a tank less than 40 gals and put at proper distance and at an above position)i would get some cod liver oil capsules, (not flavored but pure cod liver oil and NO other ingrediants) pierce open a cap and a tiny drop in each eye will up her vitamin D and help with any infection the body is trying to fight..( she has been sick for a long while to get like this, poor thing) the longer you wait the worse she is going to be.you must act asap.forget wasting money on sulfa block and commerical eye drops. her tank water must be kept CLEAN and stable temps and parameters. change out all the media in the filter or boil in water. you will have to cycle the tank all over again which means changing water every couple of days. you will have to do some work for your friend . but she deserves it.

I just spent over $1000 trying to save my 9 year old cat only to have to let her go.. sorry I am not rich enough to save this one.. I have done reptile rescue and have given everything I can for all my animals.. BUT sometimes this crap happen…doesn’t mean I should not be allowed to have pets. I would give it up if I could find proper home, but I would prefer to save the turtle.. Be kind to dragons, for thou art crunchy when roasted and taste good with ketchup. **Visit me on myspace. http://www.myspace.com/oregonherpaholic **
karen testaSeptember 21, 2010 at 5:45 pm #22881B, I am sorry you took my response as an attack. I was trying to help you. I know you have had a bad time with your pets and vet bills etc. so, i did say ‘im sorry’. I know things happen to the best people, but if you look at it from my end, I work my butt off to keep my animals healthy and I have a full plate also, sometimes not going out or not buying this or that just so i can save $ for something my pets need. It isnt fair to them, when you give a commitment to an animal, especially one that should live up to 30 yrs. I take that seriously. I also read all the time, that someone took on a turtle or more and now can’t afford to keep them or they are ill because they havent changed the water in weeks etc. They find them as ‘throw away pets’ and that frustrates me. (not saying you did this) I dont know your tank size or how you keep you water parameters, so i am just assuming here, but this probably could have been avoided if you were extra diligent with her care.(and if you know you can’t be, find someone who can BEFORE illness sets in, as she is your responsibility)water changes are pretty much ‘free’ but labor intense. I put my life on hold sometimes just to do weeklywater changes.there is a forum that has classifieds(for adoption) and a great bunch of keepers that are active in the herp world, i suggest you join to get additional opinions/help or someone that would just love her as DBTs are very popular on this site. http://www.turtleforum.com I also suggest calling your vet (reptile vet) to see if they can take payments(many do) because you dont know if she is in need of antibiotics (if the infection has gotten that far?) in any case she needs to be treated or given to someone who will asap.(i dont suggest shipping her in this condition) It isnt fair to the animal. I have two rescue females that i know need tons of cleaning to keep them healthy as they are quite large. they are in 100 gal tanks and i do a 85% water change EVERY week and feed them the best food i can afford. This pretty much assures they will stay disease free, against all oddsI hope you find help for her soon and I am sorry that you feel that i am being disrespectful to you.karen
