So I am trying to figure out a nice tank set up that looks nice but is easy to clean. Currently I have river rocks in a 55 gal tank with a fluval 304 filter, and it seems as the algea is really bad. I do a half water change every other week and a full tank change about once a month, but it seems that the green algea is really bad. There is not a whole lot of true sunlight exposure and I do not leave the uva/uvb lights on for more than 6 hrs a day. Anyone have any other ideas as far as substrate I can use that is easy to clean? Thanks! Chris

I have the same set up but in a 30 gallon tank. I am using Penn plx canister 700. I have never had any green algea. You can always just do away with the river rocks and just have a bare bottom tank. — Original Message — From:”Chris”

My best substrate is none at all but a few bites of crushed coral-larger shelled… I prefer water movement mine aren’t diggers unless in the mud. Lisa

I am new to diamondback terrapins. I have a new little guy, have had him about a month now. I am keeping him in a 30 gallon tank with a one year old pink belly side neck turtle. I have shells and pieces of coral I have collected on the beach(boiled them for 30 minutes before putting them in the tank) on the bottom for the substrate. I tried calcium sand (this was the recommendation of the breeder) but it was just too hard to keep clean. The shells look nice and it is easy to vacuum around and under them. Chester seems to enjoy chasing his ghost shrimp around the shells. He is a great little predator. My pink belly couldn’t care less about feeder fish or shrimp. I take the turtles out and put in separate containers to feed them. This really helps keep the tank clean. They really make a mess when they eat!
