Wild Caught and Fresh Water …

Not sure if I’ve asked this question on this forum … I have 2 wild caught (rescues) adults. I’ve had them now coming up on 2 years. They live in my fishroom in a 200 gallon vat which I keep brackish (apx 1.017 sg). Any reason they can’t go into an outside freshwater pond several days at a time, returning to the indoor brackish vat … I’d like to get them outside to get some natural sun, but can’t set up a brackish pond (my other turtles are freshwater). My thinking is that they won’t be exclusively in the freshwater, and the brackish water will keep skin/shell rot from growing. I don’t believe acclimation is a problem as they go into freshwater to feed several times a week. Thoughts? Jeff
Hi Jeff. I do not feel that a day outside in freshwater pond would do them any harm. The sun and fresh air will do them good, as it will for you too? Danejeffreyrichardssc
I also think the DBTs would be ok in the freshwater for some outside fun. As long as the other turtles don’t bite them or anything. Sometimes I put my two little guys in a tank on my patio, with no water but some rocks and some shade, so they can bask for about an hour on the weekend and get some natural sun. I keep a cover on the tank to protect against predators, but they are still pretty shy out there. Anyway, good luck with the outdoor basking! Dane Fagundes
