Curved ‘finger’ nails ?

Hi Everyone, Good afternoon, Can anyone help me? My turtle, he is about 4, has his front nails curving in towards his body. They are kind of long. I don’t think turtles are supposed to have their nails cut, as under the clear nail there are dark – the same color as his body, some kind of nerve or bone or I don’t know what, so I’d never touch them. But I was wondering is this ok? Normal? There was a period where he was a little inactive so maybe that’s how they grew. (?) Should I walk him outside on the concrete so he can maybe scrape them down? Please let me know. I just don’t know if this is dangerous for him or unhealthy. Carmen, is this a red-eared slider you’re referring to? Male RES grow long fingernails that curve so this is normal. If it’s a diamondback terrapin, then some pictures would be helpful since this is abnormal. Thanks. -Stephen C — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, Carmen

Carmen I would love to see the photographs as I’ve seen many wild terrapins with long nails particularly in the spring, right after hibernation. I would like to understand what is considered “too long” or “curved”. Thank you
