Good news I checked out fifteen chinese supermarket in five cities in the L.A. area(Rosemead, San Gabriel, El Monte, Alhambra, and Monterey Park). I did not find ANY terrapins!!! Unfortunately one store I did find about thirty red ear slider and in an other store I found three Florida soft shelled turtles. This was the first time I have ever looked for turtles in any markets. I don’t know if it was just that dbts are out of season or not. Has anyone ever found dbts in chinese markets in the LA area. Jonathan
Julie TougasFebruary 17, 2001 at 7:16 am #14259Attachments :My adult female is from the Chinese market in Toronto , Canada. She was purchased not by myself, about 3 years ago.I have had to do major rehab work on her since i purchased her. Since then, I have been scanning both the Toronto and Montreal chinese food markets searching to rescue more.Unfortunately I had no sucess. I say unfortunately because since new importation laws have been in place, I believe the markets must now hide the specimens they have for sale since it is illigal to sell live turtles in the markets. I am caucasian so they believed that i am going to report them and they deny that they ever had turtles for sale. Hopefully, these places are no longer supplying live turtles, but I doubt this very much since eating turtles is a strong part of asian culture. The chinese have have almost eating my beloved chinese box turtles to extinction in china. There is a season for finding turtles in the markets.I belive it is between the chinese New Year, and spring. We should start to see a saturation of the market of baby diamondbacks because many will purchse gravid females from themarkets, collect their eggs and let the female die since they are in such bad shape. I have attached a picture of my adult female. Julie Montreal,Quebec http://www.chelonian.net Jonathan wrote:
Rowena TanFebruary 17, 2001 at 1:51 pm #14260I found mine in a Chinese market in Cleveland, Ohio in May. According to my mother, they were selling live DBTs all the way into November. At the last check a few weeks ago, however, all of the dbts they had were frozen )-: Rowena
