This species is a prized food item in many urban markets in the US and in Canada. In response to citizens request the Governor of Maryland has appropriated $250,000 for a five year stock assessment of the Diamondback Terrapin, the State Reptile. Although the funds have been requested, the overall budget must be approved. This is a very important study and necessary to conserve this species.
