Hi all, I would like to hear the pros and cons of hibernating captive DBTs. What methods are used if any and if anyone thinks that hibernating them possibly increases egg fertility. Vickie
My dbt’s stay outdoors year-round. My adult breeders stay in a greenhouse for the winter, but others stay in above-the-ground ponds. We get occaisonal light freezes. I don’t know of dbt’s need cooling down, but I originally raised my albino redears indoors. When they started producing, they laid all infertile eggs. At the time everybody said you couldn’t keep them outdoors in the sun (not having melanin to protect them from the uv rays). But I put them outside with everybody else, they immediately climbed up to bask, and started laying fertile eggs. They’ve been outside for at least 7-8 years now, making lots of beautiful yellow (and orange) babies. Again, don’t know if dbt’s work the same. -Rick Van Dyke Vickie Hays wrote:
