Vicky et al, Regarding the perlite – I am trying this for the first time. Do I cover the egg completely? Or leave a portion of egg uncovered for better air flow. Also, is vermiculite still consider OK, where can I find the large particle type? I started using native sand, but thought I would try Vicki’s method with a few clutches. If I am very careful with moving eggs would it be preferred to move them on to better substrate, i.e sometime citizens bring me eggs in a bucket of sand or dirt. Should I attempt to set them up in a better substrate? In a few weeks my hatching beach should be complete and all recovered eggs will be placed in a well protected natural beach. All are welcome to visit anytime! Thanks mw

MW, I think Vickie’s one of those rare birds in regard to perlite use. ๐ I believe most of the other breeders still use vermiculite so yes, it is still ok. You should be able to find it at any nursery store or hardware store. I think the only problem with native sand is the potential for introduction of parasites like fly larva that have been known to predate the eggs. In regard to moving eggs, I personally would move them to the artificial medium since it would be more sterile and provides easier moisture control. But that’s my opinion. This is provided the eggs are positioned as close as possible to their original positions after being deposited – hopefully, people who uncover them and deliver them to you know this. A hatchling beach – should be fun! Please share pics with those of us that can’t be there! -Chun — In diamondbackterrapins@y…, “Terrapin Station at USNA/GP”
