Hi, i am a novice dbt owner, and i was wondering when they start to hibernate, how i should prepare for hibernating, and whether or not hibernating is absolutely necesary.. i keep my dbt indoors, she’s a about an 1 and 1/8 inches big, if i can bypass hibernating this year, will she still ‘know’ to do it next year? thanks, this group really has helped me an untellable amount.. I wouldn’t hibernate her. Hibernation is really quite useless unless you plan on breeding. Hibernation isn’t “known” by terrapins. They are forced into it by their environment and the temperatures around them. So to answer your question, she will always be able to hibernate in years to come. Even if you don’t do it this do it this year. John

John, If I can just twist this discussion in another direction – is there successful breeding without hibernation? Bob

I, myself, have never seen successful breeding without at least a “cool down” period. Although I am sure it does happen for some people. Jonathon of this group has terrapins laying eggs now that weren’t hibernated I’m pretty sure. Or maybe I am wrong but I thought he said they didn’t hibernate. But to answer your question, yes, it is probably possible to breed without hibernation although I have never done it myself.

I don’t hibernate personally. But my dbts might cool to 70F and have a shortened light cycle. I had 100% fertility from my primary female dbt in 2 clutches. but i guess i would hibernate too if i lived in gutatta land. BBM

What is guttata land? I artificially hibernate mine. Too risky to let them do it on their own. John
