The Aquaclears ship with a foam block and a bag of carbon to run out of the box. You can add a bag of ammonia absorber at extra cost. So far, I prefer putting two blocks of foam in the Aquaclear 300 with a carbon bag sandwiched in between. I don’t think it’s possible to get two foam blocks in the 500, though. If you’re buying mail order, the web page will usually show you the replacement parts available. Might as well order extra foam blocks and extra carbon bags when you order the filter to save on time and shipping. These items run $1.69 to $2.99.
