Most people like Aquaclear but I’m partial to Marineland Emperor filters myself – just something about the fact that they use sewer reclaim technology impresses me. Anyway, you don’t have to worry about buying pieces or parts – the filters should come as a complete setup. The only parts you’ll have to replace periodically are the filter media. But please bear in mind that you will not be getting the best use out of your filter with only 7″ of water. You may want to consider upping the depth of your tank. I would not recommend submersible filters since they just will not be able to handle the load. A canister would be good too, but not as economical. Regarding the heater – get a submersible heater. Hagen is a good brand but I’ve been out of touch with the pet retail industry so I’m not sure what else is out there nowadays. But get a submersible heater at 3-5 Watts/gallon of actual water – get one with a temperature dial on it. Otherwise, you’ll have to spend your time setting it to the right temperature and hoping your thermometer is right on. Plus, get a heater cover so that Li-Wah won’t chomp on it. If you can’t find one, just get a thin piece of PVC tubing and insert the heater in it. I’ll get off my soap box now… Chun
