Q: What causes diamondbacks’ shells to lose their melanin and become ash white? What can be done to remedy this? A: I had this happen to my first couple of terrapins. I was miss informated that terrapins did not need to have a basking area. I think the lack to sun light and a spot to dry out their shells caused their carapace to get a white haze to it. I just resently had a juvenile that get a very bad fugus attack with I was on a business trip. By the time her feet healed enough for her to get herself out of to bask her shell had already developed the white haze. As for a remedy, I don’t think their is one except for time. The scutes need to shead off naturally this can take a year or two. That is my take. Jonathan The Scute Moderator — In diamondbackterrapins@y…, Stephen and Wylee Chew
