T, I believe you are referring to scute pattern deformaties. This deforamties are normally caused by improper incubation. The scutes on the carapaces are the ones that normally get deformed. As for sexing a hatchling, there is only one way and it is not 100% accurate, that is temperature sexing. If the eggs was incubated at over 80 degrees there is a very good chance that it will be a female. I incubated mine between 82 and 84 and all of them turned out to be females. I would ask the person that you are buying yours from what he incubated them at. Most likly he incubated them at a higher temperature because they hatch faster.
