I built my first one 3 feet deep and had turtles drown. I put in river cobblestone (large gravel) at the bottom to make it 2 or 2 and half feet deep. I put branches in and series of steps made from rocks, cement blocks, and bricks to crawl up from the bottom on. Turtles that are not good swimmers I moved to shallower ponds (spots, musks, muds, box, chinese box). I’m often amazed that turtles survive in the wild!
