Of course it depends how cold your winters are, but I have plastic and fiberglass ponds that just sit on the ground, and we usually get a little ice overnight a few times, and I always worry, but the turtles always make it through. I even had a 5 inch redear accidentally in a few inches of water that got completely encased in ice make it. Hardy beasts. I’ve come to think that shallower is better than deeper. I think that in the wild many turtles probably winter over in shallow weedy areas. I’m sure you need deeper water up north, but down here 2 feet is more than enough. -Rick emneil@… wrote:
