I just acquired an original copy of “A Revision of Malaclemmys. A Genus of Turtles” by William Perry Hay published in 1904 by the Bureau of Fisheries. How many members are familiar with this publication? It has several color lithographed plates and lots of black and white photographs of DBTs Hay studied, mostly in the pounds in Crisfield, MD, where they were shipped to from Texas and Lousiana for the food trade. Hay was investigating the fesibility of captive propagation as he felt that DBTS would “soon be extinct” in the wild due to overharvesting. It includes a review of scientific literature on terrapins and discusses the evolution of names. He includes extensive physical descriptions of the following subspecies: M. centrata – The Carolina Terrapin M. centrata concentrica – The Chesapeake Terrapin M. macrospilota – The Florida Terrapin M. pileata – The Louisiana Terrapin M. littoralis – (Texas)

This is the first time I’ve heard of this publication, Todd. I find Hay’s breakdown of subspecies interesting. Could you possibly touch on some of his physical descriptions, especially of the now defunct M. centrata concentrica and the lesser known m. pileata? Thanks.
