Dear Terrapin Enthusiasts, I spent several hours organizing my terrapin files last night and came upon this document – which I though might be of interest to some of you. It was published in the 1929 in the BULLETIN OF THE UNITED STATES BUREAU OF FISHERIES Title: Review of experiments on artificial culture of diamondback terrapin By: Samuel F. Hildebrand – Director, U.S. Fisheries Biological Station, Beaufort, NC Pages: 45 Contents Include

Experiments conducted and sources of information

    Production of eggs

    Fertility of eggs

    Records of survival

    Rate of growth

    Period of activity

Food, feeding and cost of food

Copulation, laying season, and incubation period

    Space requirements

    Sex Ratio

Copies are available for a small donation to TERF (Terrapin Education and Research Foundation – Tampa Bay, FL). We are in the process of building up our reference library and also of procuring two breeding pairs of each subspecies. Aquariums around the U.S. are now working with us and we’ve begun providing captive bred and non-releasable terrapins to environmental education facilities throughout Tampa Bay and eventually the entire range of Malaclemys. If any of you ever have a surplus of a sub-species and would like to make a donation (in the form of a terrapin) to TERF (tax deductible) you can be assured the animal will be well cared for and will be used for years to come as a breeder at our educational facility or wind up at a coastal park. Individuals who do choose to donate a captive bred hatchling to TERF will have full access to our growing resource library and also support the conservation efforts of these most amazing chelonids. * I will post photos of the Bermuda terrapins in the upcoming weeks. Happy 2002, Christopher S. Boykin Director, TERF 2718 47th St. South Gulfport, FL 33704
