I just wanted to share that my Chesapeake gal here laid another two slightly dented eggs on the surface of the sand in her sand bin. Don’t know why she won’t bury them. Too stressed out from her relocation still perhaps. Maybe the sand in there isn’t ideal in some way? I’m thinking it may not be warm enough for her liking. I’ll try a different bulb over it to try and up the temp some. I think the surface of the sand is in the 80’s or low 90’s but lower down it is likely too cool. Really should get one of those fancy thermometers with the probes. Just have to convince the fiancÍŠ we should spend even more money on the new turtles… I know, make it so he wants it too… measure the temp of his beer cooling in the fridge… *grin* Anyways, these two new ones are less dented than the first which is now chalky on the exposed surface of the egg and guess what? It’s not dented anymore. Good Sign? Bad sign? Thinking good but won’t hold my breath…. or maybe I should? Swelling with stinky gases? So, now I’ve got three little eggies in my incubator. Hehe. And I’m sitting on it proud as punch… ok, not ON it but I might as well be. Confused little mother hen I am. Hehe. Ah well. Now I just have to wait a couple weeks and see if I can see anything inside them. I haven’t felt the real mom up yet tonight to see if I can still feel more obviously to come. If she continues on the way she is (assuming there are more to come, palpable or not), how long should I go before taking her in for an x-ray and oxytocin? I don’t want her to become egg bound, but I would also like to give her as much opportunity to do it the natural way first. If you can think of any way to help my gal lay the rest of her eggs I would love to hear about it. At present I’ve got the sand sloped up to the area where I have the 100watt incandescent regular light bulb overhanging. (Will switch to the flood light bulb I happily found in the garage today). The sand is about 3 inches deep on the shallow end and about 8 or 9 on the other end of the 55 gal bin. I’ve placed a couple old silk aquarium plants in there to make it look more “natural”. I’ve also placed another UV tube over the bin to help her utilize her calcium and perhaps provide some simulation of real sunlight. If it weren’t so cloudy and rainy lately I’d take her outside to lay. Her sand is fairly moist but not soggy. I have not added any peat or the like to the sand yet. Should I? Thanks for any and all suggestions! Michelle
