Hi everyone- Well it seems that my smallest turtle had one of her tank mates take a little bit onto her tail. Its not too bad but you can see the bone or cartaidge ( Im not sure which) on the tip. Poor thing– she seems to be fine otherwise- still eating and stuff. So my ??? ‘s are……. Does this like the right road to treatment- salt baths at about a gallon of water w/ a apx. a tablespoon of salt for a couple hours a day – and she usually basks for about 5-6 and totally dries out also.- And- has anyone here ever heard of a natural remedy called “colloidal sivler”? Its just water with silver and its GREAT for helping to heal cuts and wounds on people and usually safe for animals — I was gonna rub some of this on there– but does anyone have and advise and am I caring for her properly???– Is this kinda normal to happin sometimes or should I be worried that her tank mates will do this again?– they have been together for almost a year with no probs.— Thanks for any help!!! —– Heather
Hi Heather, sorry to hear about the bite. The salt baths will help but I would refrain from using colloidal silver. I’ve never heard of it used with turtles and the risks associated with use on humans is a source of concern for some. Silvadene cream, which is a sulfa-based topical medication is a much better alternative. The unfortunate reality is that sometimes, a turtle will acquire a taste for tails after munching on one. You may want to separate the injured one until its tail is completely healed and hope the perpetrator didn’t develop an unhealthy appetite and starts going for the tails of the others. Stephen- I will go and try to find Silvadene cream tonight.- I actually kind of think that the 4 inch texas chichlid fish that WAS in there did it. I put him with the three turtles which are all bigger than him thinkin it would get rid of his “I want to kill all the other fish in ocean” attitude he has!” I have removed him and Im gonna see what happens – thanks for your response stephen.!! — Heather — Stephen Chew
